He has been the Mayor of La Faye since 1997. Whilst the Mayor is only in occupation of his office at the above times the office is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am when you can find help and assistance from Marylène Epinoux. THE VILLAGE HALL In the heart of the village next door to the Mairie is the Salle des Fetes or Villae Hall. This community building is currently used for a variety of things from dance clubs to wedding celebrations and is seldom found without activity. There are currently quite a few fundraising activities underway to raise money for good causes and community projects. Avtivities are advertised on the main doorway and entrance to the building. The annex to the left is where the children are cared for in the garderie both in the mornings and evenings on school days. This building is also used as the cantine for the school in La Faye and also for catering facilities for the many fetes throughout the year. LOCAL EDUCATION The schools in the local operate as a sort of co-operative. Courcome takes children from around the age of three to five years and La Faye from six to eight years, with the third primary stage of nine to elevn years at Charmé. There is a free bus service provided for the children which connects all three schools. This is also worked in conjunction with a garderie in each village which provides care for the children both before and after school from 7.30am until school starts and afterwards from the end of the school day until 6.30pm. This service is not free but a small contribution is made each term by parents to ensure the conntinuity of the program. The bus trips are supervised at all times and the children are collected at the drop off points and escorted to and from the school building each day. Primary school education takes place Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on a regular basis but Wednesdays fluctuate and children only need attend on designated days or half days throughout the school year. Secondary school education is maintained either in Villefagnan or Ruffec. Ruffec has a bus service provided from La Faye but it requires a contribution to the fare. English speaking children can attend a Wednesday morning class in Ruffec college to help them learn French. Secondary school days of work are long and include every Wednesday for a half day. Both Ruffec and Villefagnan are excellent establishments with the same purpose as the primary schools. Their goal is the care and education of children not just to achieve the target levels set by the system as it is in the UK. Children are expected to work hard and maintain a good level of discipline in school in return each child is given every opportunity to achieve the same high level of education as everyone else regardless of their learning capability. Following on from Secondary school education is the Lycéé where students acquire skills in just about every conceivable career with the possiblity of taking one or more courses before making their final choice of career. There are many able established loval carers for pre school children and there is also a créche facility provided in Ruffec. The staff are pleasant and professional and the rates per day for both private and créche facilities are very reasonable in comparison to British rates. TRADE AND COMMERCE The commune area of La Faye contains a wealth of small industry with many artisans or tradesmen able to provide everyhing you may need from basic building and plumbing work through to sculptures and variations of food for the table either at home or out for a special occassion. Within easy driving distance of La Faye are the towns of Ruffec and Villefagnan. Each town has many facilities available to you, and both can supply vast amounts of tourist informationfor this beautiful and historic area. Ruffec also has new and imposing supermarkets of fresh and fragrant produce where you can buy almost everything under one roof. The pharmacies are well stocked and carry large varities of pills and potions and the DIY stores have a range of well made and inexpensive gadgets to suit even the most choosy of DIYers. Some staff in these stores are able to converse in English and all are friendly, helpful and polite. There are however many smaller shops in the towns which provide excellant value for money and where the usual daily shopping routine becomes a pleasure. Boutiques and specialist shops can be found in the most unusual places and there are many places where the weary shopper can take a break for coffee and watch the world go by. WHAT'S NEW OR OLD? The commune of La Faye and its surrounding areas are beautifully picturesque many good walks or cycle trials can be found following the old chemin or white roads. There is also an unusual cemetry which is unique in its circular design. As the seasons go by the ever changing countryside gives the observer a new picture from day to day. The air is fresh and clean and there are always new places to be explored and memories to be made. Whether it is a short after dinner stroll you need or a lengthy hike, everyones tastes can be catered for here. HISTORY ANCIENT AND MODERN Local stones lays by the roadside where the avid explorer can find ammonites dating back thousands of years. The are also many later constructions with an intriguing history just waiting for you to rediscover them. Monuments and curiosities are abundant and each has its own story to tell. Add to this a diverse and extremely interesting collection of wildlife, lizards, snakes and other rarely seen animals, not forgetting many varieties of decorative beetles, butterflies, hovering moths and preying mantis, to the graceful and beautiful birds of prey and roaming wild deer and boar. Its impossible to be bored in La Faye. Note: Please respect the countryside and take your rubbish home with you. Stay on established routes and keep your dog on a lead. Please take extra care during the hunting season. PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE In an area as lovely as this its hard to think of planning anything which may alter the landscape. However in an effort to produce much needed alternative electric power, plans are in progress for wind turbines to be placed on sites between La faye and Villemorte. Six of these turbines are planned in a row from the D740 in a north westerly direction towards La Renaudiere. Far from marring the landscape the plans have been made to compliment the surrounding area and make good use of a natural resource although it seems things have yet to be finalised and agreed. NEED MORE HELP OR HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD? Many new arrivals here often feel isolated and sometimes find the difference in cultures and language hard to deal with. However there are several groups of new settlers here and local meetings are held every month details of which can be found at the post office in Courcome. Notice boards in many of the shops are also a good source of information too. There are several websites for conversation and more information on what to do, how to do it and local events. One of xhich is www.totalfrance.com another is http://french.about.com helpful for learning language and lots of other things and one church site for those who need it www.church-in-france.com It has been a pleasure to provide this information for you and I hope that you find it of interest and have found it helpful. The information has been given by many resources and is intended purely as a guide to La Faye and its surrounding areas. I have tried where possible to ensure that all translations are correct but some things may alter from month to month and you should ensure that dates and times are correct beforehand.
